Plant now

What can I plant right now?

Rows of leafy greens filling a garden bed in low evening sun

Pick your region below. Each page ranks the crops its state extension service publishes for that region against the local average first frost date, and names the ones that have already run out of season this year.

How the frost runway works

Start from the published window
Every crop row starts at the planting window its state extension service publishes for that region, quoted on the page.
Add days to maturity
A sowing made today is expected to be ready that many days later. That span is the bar length in the chart.
Compare against the average first frost
A crop whose expected harvest lands after the average first frost date has run out of runway. Crops this catalog records as frost tolerant are harvested through light frost instead of being lost to it.
Recalculate for the reader
The static page freezes its example dates at build time and says so. Opening the page with JavaScript recalculates every date for the reader on the day they arrive.

Regions covered

Five regions are covered so far: Texas (AgriLife Region III), North Florida, Central Maryland, the New York City area and York County, Pennsylvania. There is no page for any other state or region yet, and no page here should be read as guidance for one.

Why the two frost dates are not comparable

The frost dates on these region pages are not all the same measurement and cannot be compared or subtracted across regions. North Florida, Central Maryland, the New York City area and York County use NOAA 36 F frost dates with a stated period of record, and each of the last three also lists the first-frost date its own extension guide assumes; the Texas dates come from extension planting guides that state no temperature threshold, and the Harris County value is a freeze date rather than a frost date.
